Resources Required for a Full Hamilton Method Workshop

Please note: partial workshops will require smaller subsets of this list depending on the elements included in the workshop.

Time and Space: A full Hamilton Method workshop requires roughly 44 contact or rehearsal hours as a full company plus an additional 30 hours of rehearsal for each small group.  Most of this needs to be in a space that is large enough for the whole group to do movement exercises comfortably and safely. Play reading and discussion and script writing meetings could potentially be held in smaller spaces, but this only makes up about 18 hours of the total time required.

Performance Venue: The final performance should be held in a place where an audience can attend, since success in performance is the final step of a full process.  However, since the performance is a workshop performance with emphasis on the scripts and performers rather than fully developed technical aspects, it need not be a formal theater space. The work can be created to be performed anywhere.

Technical Requirements: The final performance is not required to have any technical aspects, however we have usually found spaces where we can use simple lights and a sound system and build a set. How much tech you want to include for your performance is up to you, however directing staff should be made aware of what tech will be available for the performance from the beginning of the planning process as it may inform choices they make about what plays to include in the curriculum. If you desire a more technically complete show you will need to provide the necessary technicians, we are not trained theatrical technicians.

Teaching Materials:

  • Reader: It is best if a collection of xeroxed hard copies of the plays we read and discuss can provided to each participant in a reader.  This way they have a record of what they have studied and they can take notes on their own copies. This requires seeking the proper permissions and in some cases paying royalties for reproducing the plays for educational purposes.
  • Target Story text:  Participants should be provided with hard copies of the source text of the target story so they may make their own notes on it.
  • Scripts: The script writing process sometimes requires printing multiple drafts of scripts. Once scripts are finalized each performer will need a hard copy of each script in which they will perform for line memorization and blocking notes.

Administration:  (We may be able to help with some administrative duties if we are on staff for your workshop, this would need to be negotiated at the beginning of the planning process)

Administration is needed for:

  • Publicity for the opportunity to participate/recruitment of participants.
  • Enrollment, tuition collection, and records keeping
  • Budgeting and accounting
  • Publicity for the performance/audience recruitment/program creation
  • Recruitment and coordination of any technical staff required
  • Performance ticketing and program
  • Support for technical aspects (if they are so developed they require support). For example: a lighting designer or technician if you wish to have lights, a costume maker or coordinator if you wish to have costumes, a crew to run lights and sound during the performances if they are included

Staff:  Staffing needs may vary depending on the size of your workshop and how much you wish to develop different technical aspects for performance and on whether or not you have any administrative support from your organization.  Here is a list of possible staffing positions that may be required:

  • Lead director(s)/teacher(s)
  • Assistant director(s)/teacher(s)
  • Producer
  • Technical director
  • Technical staff
  • Performance crew
  • Front of house/box office
  • Administrative staff (publicist, accountant, graphic designer, social media, documentarian, support for enrollment and records keeping)

Artist Fees:  We believe all artists should be fairly compensated for their work. We expect all directors, teaching staff, and tech crew be compensated in line with other similar projects at your organization. We do not have set fees for our services, we will work with you on fair compensation rates depending on your annual operating budget and procedures.

Budget:  We cannot suggest a specific budget amount because so much of the budget is dependent on how much technical development you wish to do for the performance, what kind of facilities may be at your disposal, and where you are located, but at the very least your budget will need to include:

  • Work Space
  • Performance Space
  • Insurance
  • Artist and Staff Compensation
  • Teaching Materials  (see above)
  • Technical Budget (for set building, props, costumes)
  • Publicity
  • Administration (see above)
