Manhattan Experimental Theater Workshop

MXTW is not a project of XTL but rather the project which brought XTL about. The Hamilton Method was developed in MXTW. The members of XTL got their training as participants in and directors of MXTW and continue to be involved as staff members of MXTW.

MXTW is a program of The Manhattan Arts Center in Manhattan, KS.

MXTW is a 5-week experimental theater workshop for high school students. Part classroom and part production company, participants study various styles of avant-garde theater, then write and perform original pieces under the influences of the styles they have studied.

A Short History

First begun in 1989, MXTW is now a program of the Manhattan Arts Center (MAC) in Manhattan, Kansas. What turned out to be the “first Workshop” was to be a one-time event. But it seemed to fill a need and, so, it has continued for over 30 years.

MXTW has served hundreds of students and produced public performances of hundreds of original scripts.

MXTW was, and continues to be, a startling success. Because of the Method MXTW employs, participants develop a high level of confidence. This leads to performances that often astonish even those who know the performers best – their friends and parents.

The Hamilton Method educates students in ways experimental theater artists have challenged traditional narrative theater. Our performances educate our audiences to that end as well.
